Dragon fruit beneficial even in drought

Dragon fruit, grown in Central America, Southeast Asian nations, especially Thailand, grows on very low water.  This fruit is in great demand in the world market as it is nutritious to eat.  Ashti MLA Bhimrao Dhonde, who is a sportsman and a hobbyist, came to know about 'Dragon Fruit' a few years back and has been cultivating Dragon Fruit in Paddy's five acres for the last two years.

After planting 1600 saplings per acre on low water, they bear fruit for about 20 years.  Since one tree produces more than one hundred fruits in each season, the yield is Rs.  One lakh per acre.  With an initial investment of Rs 2 lakh for cultivation, there is not much to spend on cultivation.  Therefore, as Dragon Fruit is a 'financial boon' for the farmers in the drought prone areas, District Collector Navalkishore Ram also visited and appealed to the farmers in the drought prone areas to take this fruit

crop.  Ashti, Patoda and Shirur talukas of Beed district are in drought prone areas.  Ashti recorded as the lowest rainfall taluka in the country.  Since they are originally from a farming family, they carry out various experiments in agriculture.  They focus on increasing economic income by doing farming differently from traditional farming.  A few years ago, he decided to plant this fruit after learning that the Dragon Fruit crop yields good yields on very low water.  Growing in Central America, Southeast Asian nations,

especially in Thailand, this fruit is in great demand in the world market.  As it is very nutritious to eat, the price per kg is up to Rs.  Dhonde has land in Kada, Chobha, Nimgaon area.  Yield has started in two years after planting dragon fruit on five acres of paddy.  This fruit crop survived the drought.  Sixteen hundred trees were planted in one acre.  After an initial investment of Rs.  2 lakhs, a tree yields more than a hundred fruits every season for 20 years.  As a result, farmers get more than one lakh rupees per acre.  So you don't have to spend much on cultivation every year.

Drought situation in Ashti taluka remained severe for four consecutive years due to lack of rains.  For the farmers in such areas, this dragon fruit orchard will be beneficial.  This fruit is in great demand in the Mumbai-Vashi market.  This fruit, which is very useful and nutritious for health, is an 'economic boon' to the farmer in fallow lands.  Due to lack of rainfall in Ashti taluka, the emphasis is on traditional farming.  Last season, there was no water for the animals to drink.  When it rains, wheat, sorghum, millet, maize and to some extent sugarcane, while cotton is grown as a cash crop.  Due to the vagaries of nature, the season is wasted and the farmer finds himself in financial crisis.

In such a situation, Dhonde succeeded in giving a good yield to the farmers of this area on low water.  District Collector Navalkishore Ram visited Dragon Fruit Farm and got information about this farm.  And issued a press release urging farmers in drought-prone areas to cultivate low-water dragon fruit.  Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also visited Dhonde's farm a few days ago and got to know about Dragon Fruit.

Due to this new experiment of Dhonde, many farmers in the taluka have started turning to this field.  Dragon fruit seedlings are available from nurseries in the city area.  This is being discussed among the farmers due to the income earned from the dragon fruit farm taken by Dhonde in five acres and many farmers are coming in large numbers to see this farm every day.

Dragon fruit is low in calories but packed with essential vitamins and minerals.  It also contains a substantial amount of dietary fiber.

 Here’s a rundown of the main nutrients in a one-cup serving (227 grams) (1Trusted Source, 2):

 Calories: 136

 Protein: 3 grams

 Fat: 0 grams

 Carbohydrates: 29 grams

 Fiber: 7 grams

 Iron: 8% of the RDI

 Magnesium: 18% of the RDI

Vitamin C: 9% of the RDI

Vitamin E: 4% of the RDI

Beyond essential nutrients, dragon fruit supplies beneficial plant compounds like polyphenols, carotenoids and betacyanins (3Trusted Source).

SUMMARYDragon fruit is low in calories but rich in vitamins, minerals and beneficial plant compounds such as polyphenols, carotenoids and betacyanins.

Free radicals are unstable molecules that cause cell damage, which may lead to inflammation and disease.

One way to combat this is by eating antioxidant-rich foods like dragon fruit.

Antioxidants work by neutralizing free radicals, thus preventing cell damage and inflammation.

Studies suggest that diets high in antioxidants may help prevent chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes and arthritis (4Trusted Source).

Dragon fruit contains several types of potent antioxidants, including (5Trusted Source):

Vitamin C: Observational studies have found correlations between vitamin C intake and cancer risk.  For example, a study in 120,852 people associated higher intakes of vitamin C with lower rates of head and neck cancer (6Trusted Source).

Betalains: Test-tube studies indicate betalains can combat oxidative stress and may have the ability to suppress cancer cells (7).

Carotenoids: Beta-carotene and lycopene are the plant pigments that give dragon fruit its vibrant color.  Diets rich in carotenoids have been linked to a reduced risk of cancer and heart disease (8Trusted Source, 9Trusted Source, 10Trusted Source).

Importantly, antioxidants work best when eaten naturally in food, rather than in pill form or as a supplement.  In fact, antioxidant supplements may have harmful effects, and taking them without medical supervision is not recommended (11Trusted Source, 12Trusted Source).

On the other hand, dragon fruit is highly recommended.

SUMMARYDragon fruit contains the antioxidants vitamin C, beta-carotene, lycopene and betalain.  Studies have linked diets high in antioxidants to a reduced risk of chronic disease.

,

Dietary fibers are nondigestible carbohydrates that boast an extensive list of potential health benefits.

Health authorities recommend 25 grams of fiber per day for women and 38 grams for men.  Like antioxidants, fiber supplements do not have the same health benefits as fiber from foods (13Trusted Source, 14Trusted Source).

With 7 grams per one-cup serving, dragon fruit is an excellent whole-food source (1Trusted Source).

Although fiber is probably most well known for its role in digestion, research has suggested it may also play a role in protecting against heart disease, managing type 2 diabetes and maintaining a healthy body weight (13Trusted Source, 15Trusted Source, 16Trusted Source).

Although more research is needed, some observational studies suggest that diets high in fiber may protect against colon cancer (17Trusted Source, 18Trusted Source, 19Trusted Source).

While no studies have linked dragon fruit to any of these conditions, its high-fiber content can help you meet your recommended daily values.

However, it’s important to note that high-fiber diets can have drawbacks, especially if you’re accustomed to a low-fiber diet.  To avoid stomach discomfort, increase your intake of dietary fiber gradually and drink plenty of fluids.

SUMMARYDragon fruit offers 7 grams of fiber per serving, making it an excellent choice for meeting your daily fiber needs.

Your gut is home to some 100 trillion diverse microorganisms, including more than 400 species of bacteria (20Trusted Source).

Many researchers believe this community of microorganisms may impact your health.  Both human and animal studies have associated imbalances in your gut to conditions like asthma and heart disease (21Trusted Source).

Given that dragon fruit contains prebiotics, it can potentially improve the balance of good bacteria in your gut (22).

Prebiotics are a specific type of fiber that promotes the growth of healthy bacteria in your gut.

Like all fibers, your gut cannot break them down.  However, the bacteria in your gut can digest them.  They use the fiber as fuel for growth, and you reap the benefits.

In particular, dragon fruit mainly promotes the growth of two families of healthy bacteria: lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria (22, 23, 24).

Regularly consuming prebiotics may reduce the risk of infection in your digestive tract and diarrhea.  This is because prebiotics promote the growth of good bacteria, which researchers believe may outcompete the bad (13Trusted Source, 25Trusted Source).
For example, a study in travelers showed that those who consumed prebiotics before and during travel experienced fewer and less severe episodes of traveler’s diarrhea (13Trusted Source).

Some studies also suggest prebiotics may ease symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease and colon cancer.  Unfortunately, these findings are inconsistent (13Trusted Source, 25Trusted Source).

While much of the research on prebiotics is favorable, the research on the prebiotic activity of dragon fruit is limited to test-tube studies.  More studies are needed to determine its true effect on the human gut.

SUMMARYDragon fruit may promote the growth of healthy bacteria in the gut, which is associated with a healthy gastrointestinal tract.

 5. Strengthens Your Immune System

Your body’s ability to fight infection is determined by several different factors, including the quality of your diet.

The vitamin C and carotenoids in dragon fruit may boost your immune system and prevent infection by protecting your white blood cells from damage (26Trusted Source, 27Trusted Source).

The white blood cells in your immune system attack and destroy harmful substances.  However, they are extremely sensitive to damage by free radicals (26Trusted Source, 27Trusted Source).

As potent antioxidants, vitamin C and carotenoids can neutralize free radicals and defend your white blood cells against harm.

SUMMARYDragon fruit’s high supply of vitamin C and carotenoids may offer immune-boosting properties.

Dragon fruit is one of the few fresh fruits that contain iron.

Iron plays a crucial role in transporting oxygen throughout your body.  It also plays an important role in breaking down food into energy (28Trusted Source).

Unfortunately, many people do not get enough iron.  In fact, it has been estimated that 30% of the world’s population is deficient in iron, making it the most common nutrient deficiency worldwide (29Trusted Source).
To combat low iron levels, it’s important to consume a variety of iron-rich foods.  Rich sources of iron include meats, fish, legumes, nuts and cereals.

Dragon fruit may be another great option, as one serving contains 8% of your recommended daily intake (RDI).  It also contains vitamin C, which helps your body absorb iron (28Trusted Source).

SUMMARYDragon fruit supplies iron along with vitamin C, a combination that may improve your body’s absorption of this important mineral.

Dragon fruit is a nutritious - not to mention vibrant - fruit that can benefit your body and your taste buds, says registered dietitian Mira Ilic, MS, RDN, LD.

Ready to get a little adventurous?  Here’s how to incorporate dragon fruit into your diet when it’s in season from summer to early fall.

What is dragon fruit, and what does it taste like?

Dragon fruit, also called pitaya or strawberry pear, looks like something straight out of a Dr.  Seuss book: On the outside, it’s a pink oval with green scales (hence the “dragon” name).  Inside, it has white flesh with tiny black seeds.  The fruit’s strange appearance also gives off “psychedelic artichoke” vibes.

“It’s a tropical fruit that comes from a cactus.  It’s available everywhere around the world, but it’s indigenous to Mexico and South America, ”Ilic notes.

“If you like kiwi fruit and pears, then you’ll probably like dragon fruit.  It’s sweet and crunchy. ”

Dragon fruits come in a variety of shapes and colors:

Pink skin with white flesh.  This is the most well-known kind, but it’s the least sweet.  It’s sold under the names including Alice, Cosmic Charlie and Guyute.

Pink skin with red or pink flesh.  Bigger and sweeter than its white-fleshed cousin, this variety is sold in stores under names such as Red Jaina and Bloody Mary.

Pink skin with purple flesh.  Look for the name “American Beauty” in stores.

Yellow skin with white flesh.  Yellow dragon fruit is the hardest to find, but it’s also the sweetest.

The benefits of eating dragon fruit

The flesh of the dragon fruit is low in calories and fat-free.  It also contains plenty of:

 Fiber

Dragon fruit is an excellent source of fiber, Ilic says.  The daily recommendation for adults is at least 25 grams - and dragon fruit packs 7 grams in a single 1-cup serving.

"Fiber, may benefit gastrointestinal and cardiovascular health," notes Ilic.  “Fiber is also filling, which is helpful if you’re trying to lose weight.  People who eat whole, fiber-rich foods are more likely to maintain a healthy weight. ”

Dragon fruit has a ton of beneficial vitamins and minerals, including:

 Carotenoids (may reduce cancer risk).

Lycopene (may improve heart health and reduce cancer risk).

Magnesium (important for cell function, and dragon fruit provides 18% of the recommended daily amount).

Iron (important for healthy blood and energy, and dragon fruit contains 8% of the recommended daily intake).

Vitamin C (helps your body absorb the iron and boosts immune system health).

 Gut benefits

Healthy bacteria in your gut may help digestion and even reduce colon cancer risk.  "Some studies have shown that dragon fruit promotes the growth of healthy gut bacteria," says Ilic.  "It may have a positive effect on the gut microbiome, the good bacteria in our intestines."

If you can’t find dragon fruit in your local supermarket, you may have better luck in a specialty food store or Asian market.

To pick one out, Ilic recommends trusting your gut.  “Follow your fruit know-how,” she says.

“It should be slightly soft when you’re testing it with your finger.  If it's overly firm, you can still bring it home and leave it on your counter to ripen. "

Peel and cut it into sections when you’re ready to eat it.  Much like an avocado, you eat the flesh and discard the skin.  You could also cut it in half and scoop out the flesh with a spoon or melon baller.

Dragon fruit is best eaten raw, but you can throw it on the grill like some other fruits.  Enjoy it on its own or add it to:

 Cocktails.

 Desserts.

Fish, especially cod, tuna and mahimahi.

 Salads.

 Smoothies.

"Once you cut it up, wrap it tightly and put it in your fridge," says Ilic.  "When your dragon fruit starts to get mushy and brown, throw it away."
