Write a How-to Article in 6 Easy Steps

STEP 1: CHOOSE YOUR TOPIC

Choose a topic that interests you enough to focus on at least a week or two. If your topic is broad, narrow it down. Instead of writing about how to decorate your home, try to cover how you can decorate your home in a country style with a sharp budget. That is much clearer and, thus, easier to deal with.

Then write a draft that doesn't go down well with you. Stay relaxed, avoid getting analysis, and enjoy the process of sharing what you know. When you are done, you will have the blank bones of an article that you can only write. Then set it aside for a moment.

STEP 3: RESEARCH.

Research will really build your story. Good information on how to do this:

  4. Anecdotes (short stories, depictions of you or someone else)
  5. Quotes and examples from people like a reader, or from popular books on the subject
  6. References to other media (film, television, radio)
  7. Local references or local events (in the case of regional / local publications)
  8. Useful tools, resources or products (if there are many, consider creating a sidebar)

Collect all the items and put them in a folder, electronic text, notebook or whatever you like. Don't forget to follow the source if you are asked by the editor later to confirm it. You may want to filter your research in a different area than to collect it. Or just keep spraying your research when you get it. It's like cooking - play until you feel like you have "just fine."

STEP 4: STRENGTHEN YOUR DRUG

To keep your audience in mind, write solid drafts that include new support information you've collected.
